FONTAINEBLEAU, France, SINGAPORE, and SAN FRANCISCO, April 28, 2023
In an exciting development within the realm of artificial intelligence, the INSEAD Business School has revealed its innovative poetic generative AI applications, which aim to rival the popular ChatGPT.
Moving Beyond ChatGPT’s Limitations
Despite the widespread popularity of ChatGPT, it has often been the subject of criticism for generating unreliable and biased search results. A recent media report even concluded that “ChatGPT Is Pretty Bad At Poetry, According To Poets.” However, INSEAD’s AI lab has taken up the challenge to improve upon this, proving that the literary ability of AI should not be discounted.
TotoPoetry: The Poetry Generator
One of the applications developed by INSEAD’s AI lab is TotoPoetry. It’s an AI-driven poetry generator trained on a rule-oriented approach. According to Philip M. Parker, INSEAD Chaired Professor of Management Science and founder of the INSEAD AI lab, TotoGEO, the lab’s algorithms have achieved three notable milestones: creating the world’s longest poem, the first unabridged dictionary consisting of definitions written in verse across some 20 genres of poetry, and the largest collection of poetry written by a single source.
AI Poetry Comparison: ChatGPT vs TotoGEO
Parker gave an example of how TotoPoetry’s rule-based algorithms outshine the deep-learning ones of ChatGPT in creating a didactic limerick about love. According to Parker, TotoGEO’s output adhered to the strict rhyme scheme of limericks and accurately defined love, while ChatGPT’s poem did not meet the structural requirements of a limerick.
A Deeper Dive into AI Methodologies
For those interested in a more in-depth analysis of the various AI methodologies underpinning ChatGPT and other applications, Parker has written an INSEAD Knowledge article on the topic. He also revealed that the INSEAD TotoGEO AI lab plans to launch even more groundbreaking AI applications in the coming months, including a powerful search engine, a newspaper generator, and a Wikipedia-like website.
The INSEAD TotoGEO AI Lab: A Brief Overview
Founded in 2000 on the Fontainebleau campus, the INSEAD AI Lab’s overarching project is called TotoGEO. The lab’s projects span virtually all subject domains, including education, science, agriculture, finance, and marketing. The lab has produced research studies, poetry, crossword books, 3D games, short videos, mobile applications, and more. In more recent times, it has generated local newspapers, developed first drafts of encyclopedic articles, and created fully operational search engines for underserved industries, languages, or geographies.
